“Lou’s Shack”, Aldinga: on Old Port Rd, just near the entrance to the Eco Village.
I had been to “Lou’s Shack” previously but now, in the hunt for vinyl, I made a more committed visit.
Lou is a really amiable bloke with a wonderful, small shop (limited opening hours mainly 10:00AM – 4:00PM, Fri / Sat / Sun*, small shop / small hours). Some good looking “bric-a-brac”, but I didn’t pay much attention. The vinyl is very good, not cheap but priced appropriately and fairly according to rarity and condition. Coulda (shoulda) boughta lot more but I’m on a mission. And I’m a cheapskate. (I have to have some enforced parameters in order to limit my latest collecting obsession.) I settled for Professor Longhair (“House Party, New Orleans Style”) on the Rounder Records label (don’t see many of them anymore) in excellent condition and at $25, more than fair!
Another thing that Lou is involved in is “The Rodeo”. It’s such a brilliant idea. Something like “The Hill-Billy Hoot”, but live.
It came about something like this: a bunch of like minded people had been doing “open mic” sessions and started talking amongst themselves. Then, just like Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland before them, they thought “why not put on a show?” An “open mic” show, for the “Fringe” (no less). Ingenious! It’s going to be at the Sourc’d Cafe and Wine Bar. It’s a long way from my place, especially with RBTs. I’m thinking “I’m going to put a mattress in the back of the van.” Tickets for Lou’s Shack Rodeo Show are available through Fringetix (https://adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix).
*The hours are a bit variable, especially in the Fringe / Festival / Womad period, best to check the website / facebook before setting out.
